Wooden Terrace Renovation
Båstad • Restoring a Wooden Deck in a Coastal Climate
In this project, we renovated a 45 sqm wooden terrace (altan) at a private villa in Båstad. Due to sun, wind, and sea salt, the wood had darkened and cracked, and some of the screws had begun to rust. Our task was to restore the terrace's structural integrity and original appearance without a complete tear-down.
Coastal Climate Challenges
Båstad is located directly on the coast, meaning the humid, salty sea air creates a harsh environment for both wood and metal. Due to a lack of maintenance, the deck was affected by surface mold, and standard zinc-plated screws had rusted and snapped, leaving the planks loose.
Solutions & Work Process
We developed a renovation method that guarantees long-lasting durability:
- Thorough inspection of the supporting frame (it remained solid and did not need replacement).
- Deep chemical cleaning to remove dirt, mold, and old oil residues, followed by pressure washing.
- Professional sanding of the entire deck to remove dead wood fibres and smooth the surface.
- Local replacement of damaged or decayed planks with new class AB pressure-treated wood (tryckimpregnerat virke).
- Re-fastening the deck with new premium rust-resistant ESSVE screws (C4/C5 corrosion class).
- Application of two coats of premium protective oil with UV blockers for deep penetration and long-lasting lustre.
Project Results
The terrace was given a second life and strong protection for the future:
- Budget-friendly: the renovation cost the client about 60% less than building a brand new terrace from scratch.
- Aesthetics: the wood regained a beautiful warm tone and a smooth texture that is comfortable to walk on barefoot.
- Durability: thanks to rust-resistant screws and high-quality oil, the terrace is protected for at least 5 years with regular maintenance.
- Safety: no more loose boards or protruding rusty screws.
